Article Title: Visual Performance and Patient Satisfaction of Bilaterally Implanted Extended Depth of Focus Intraocular Lens: Outcomes of a Multicenter Registry
Article Snippet: Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are implanted during cataract and refractive lens exchange (RLE) surgery to replace the cataractous lens or to correct refractive errors; however, refractive outcomes following surgery are an area of concern.1-3 With the recent developments in optical biometry, IOL power calculation formulas,4 and the advancement of surgical technology and techniques, the resolution of cataracts or refractive errors has dramatically evolved over the past decades.5,6 Surgeons and patients now demand better visual outcomes owing to increased life expectancy, older adults seeking an active lifestyle,7 and an increasing reliance on digital devices (computers, smartphones, and tablets).8 On a global scale, in approximately 86% of patients, monofocal IOLs are implanted during cataract surgery.3 However, monofocal IOLs lack adequate correction of intermediate and near vision, and therefore patients often require spectacle correction.9 On the other hand, diffractive trifocal IOLs offer improved visual acuity at intermediate and near distances, and a greater likelihood of spectacle independence than monofocal IOLs.9-11 However, patients receiving multifocal lenses are more likely to report visual disturbances (halos or glare) than patients receiving monofocal lenses.9-11 Given that patients desire spectacle independence after cataract or RLE surgeries,7 there exists a need for IOLs that offer continuous vision across all focal lengths and a low visual disturbance profile.12,13 The extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs were developed to create a single elongated focal point to improve the range of vision, primarily intermediate vision, and to minimize visual disturbances.13 AcrySof IQ Vivity (Alcon Laboratories, Inc) is a novel EDOF IOL ABSTRACT
